Avery

Expanding an African American library.

We joined a group of 158 lenders by contributing $50 to Avery’s microloan on August 12, 2021.

Avery is an entrepreneur from Wisconsin. He has 3 children and reading is one of their favorite pastimes. However, he soon realized that black children were minimally represented in children’s books. So in 2016, his family set out to change that by starting the Upendo Library – an African American library.

So far, they have self-published 4 books. But, it costs anywhere from four to six thousand dollars to self-publish a book.

Avery was seeking this loan to publish 2 new books. These books will be written for children that are in foster care or have absent parents. What’s even better is that he would like to provide these books for free to children that have been taken out of the home and are in transition. He has supplied free books to over 2,000 children. Simply incredible!

But wait, there’s more…

A portion of the proceeds from Avery’s book sales will go back into the community. It will help provide workshops to young authors and teach them how to to create their own books.
